day 10 – the bridegroom’s love
Chick-flicks abound, don’t they? And exquisite fairy-tales were the chick-flicks from times past. Girls young and old seem to love a story that ends in a beautiful marriage where everyone lives happily ever after.
There must be something in the way God created our heart that longs to be loved the adoring, sacrificial and everlasting way a groom loves his bride. Earthly examples of this love are not always great and sadly are sometimes quite devastating. However, we all seem to know how it “should” look. Maybe it’s the way we’ve been created or maybe it’s all those books we’ve read and movies we’ve watched that have defined this sought after love in our hearts.
The church is often called, “The Bride of Christ”. This symbolism is right through the bible. It starts in the Old Testament with Israel’s relationship with God and then in the New Testament becomes the relationship of the followers of Christ, us, with Christ Himself. In fact, in Revelation the coming wedding is described.
Let us rejoice and be glad
and give him glory!
For the wedding of the Lamb has come,
and his bride has made herself ready.
Fine linen, bright and clean,
was given her to wear.
(Fine linen stands for the righteous acts of God’s holy people)
Christ’s bridegroom love is perfect. It doesn’t have any earthly flaws or weaknesses. His love lasts for all eternity.
Lord, thank You that Your love for us is so great and You willingly sacrificed Yourself for our hand in marriage. May we truly know and understand this perfect bridegroom love greater than we ever have before.
